This phrase is thrown around all the time and we normally associate it with 'Eat your greens' and 'five-a-day'. Alternatively, I think you can apply this phrase to more than simply your dietary habits. I'm not poo-pooing broccoli, but instead suggesting that 'you are what you eat' can also be applied to spiritual and mental feeding. What do you feed your soul with?
For some, this post may be difficult to stomach! I want to challenge you today, as much as challenge myself about how we satisfy our hunger. As humans we all experience an emptiness and a hunger. But how do we fill that?
We are told throughout the bible about the differemces between the world and God. let me lay it out for you in a few short bullet points...
The World -
+ Fake and Superficial
+ Short-term
+ Concerned with 'Me, me, me...'
+ Not Soul-fulfilling
+ Materialistic
+ Unable to satisfy the desires of the heart
+ Constantly Changing
God and His Kingdom -
+ Completely fulfilling
+ All-loving
+ Ultimate truth
+ Romancer of the Soul
+ Completely unchanging
+ Eternally valuable
+ Concerned with ultimate holiness (which in turn brings happiness) of all people
+ Focused on Love
When we read trashy magazines and watch immoral movies and TV programs, we are fuelling the world's industry, and feeding our own minds and souls with junk. Not only do we end up funding exploitation, sexualisation, and slavery etc, but we also harm ourselves. 'Junk in, junk out', as my dear Mother always says. What we feed into our hearts and minds is what will come out again. We believe that we give from our hearts and 'From the Heart the Mouth speaks.' Well if our hearts are full of worldly junk, then what are we giving and saying to other people? are we speaking words of truth over them? Are we giving them gifts for eternity?
Mumford and Sons - "Where you invest your love, you invest your life."
If you love the world, and feed on worldly things, then your life will be short and unfulfilled. But if you love God and His kingdom, then your life will be an entirely different story...
You will give better. You will love better. You will live better.
I leave you with a quote from Narnia, "To defeat the darkness out there, you must defeat the darkness in yourself."
